Sandy spans a wider range of housing ages than most south-valley cities. The older neighbourhoods near Historic Sandy date to the mid-century and earlier, while the eastern bench below Little Cottonwood is largely 1980s through 2000s. Canyon airflow can act on a direct-vent termination strongly enough to disturb combustion, so the appliance shuts down on safety. It is normally corrected at the termination rather than inside the firebox.
If a small flame burns continuously even when the fireplace is off, it is a standing pilot. If there is no flame at rest and you hear clicking when it starts, it is electronic ignition. They fail in completely different ways.
