Portland's inner east side — Alberta, Hawthorne, Sellwood, Laurelhurst, Woodstock and Irvington — is largely pre-1940 housing, and most of those homes began with a masonry firebox that was later converted with a gas log set or a direct-vent insert and a stainless liner.
