Draper is one of the newest parts of the Salt Lake valley. Most of its housing went up after 1995, and the bench neighbourhoods above Traverse Mountain are newer still, so the overwhelming majority of Draper fireplaces are sealed direct-vent units with electronic ignition rather than the standing-pilot appliances found in older Salt Lake City homes. They fail electronically — control modules, igniters, flame-sense rods and flat backup batteries — not through thermocouple corrosion.
Draper's bench also sits noticeably higher than the valley floor, several hundred feet above downtown Salt Lake in the upper neighbourhoods. Altitude jetting matters here as much as anywhere along the Wasatch Front, and a unit specified for sea level will soot and run yellow regardless of how new it is. Age is rarely the issue on a newer unit. Along the Wasatch Front the common cause is orifice sizing left at sea-level specification, which makes the appliance burn rich at Draper elevations. Correcting the jetting and air shutters normally clears it.
